Good Morning! Friday, May 7th 2021
Good Morning! I hope the day finds you doggedly determined to delight in dandelions and daffodils!
Yesterday was a good long day of driving! It started out at Clam beach state park in just north of Eureka and ended some 366 miles, and 15 hours later in San Fransisco. The only time I wasn’t on Highway 1, is when I was on Mattole road.
I took Mattole road on a whim, which ended up being a long, primitive road that wound up high into the mountains and then plunged back down to the sea. All the time passing isolated farms and pastures, and scraggly land.
It turned out to be a bit longer than I expected, and I started to worry that I would be able to get to the other end of it on the fuel that I had. Fortunately, there was Fuel at Honeydew and the little everything store that they had there. They didn’t have premium fuel, so I grabbed 5 gallons of regular to make sure that I would make it to the other end of it.
The last part of the road out of there was through the Humboldt Redwoods state park. And that ended up connecting to the Avenue of the giants. That road was also tremendous and twisty. When I got to highway 101 again, I decided to stay on the Avenue of the giants, heading south. I stopped at Meyers flat and drove my car through a redwood 😉
After lunch and Fuel at Miranda, I got back on the road and headed down to Leggett, where I jumped off of 101, and got onto Highway 1 proper, and started what might be the most spectacular drive I think I have ever done. It is a super well-maintained road with so many twisties and stunning views. I think I was only ever behind another car for just a handful of minutes in the 7 hours I was on the Pacific Coast Highway there.
I made it to George and T’s place at 9:40 pm, and George had made room in his garage for me to park my car. It was st George’s day, and he prepared me two excellent lamb chops and a ribeye steak. And oh my, were they good. George and I had a glass of wine and caught up before crawling into bed.
Love Ya
Dan W
