Day 11 – San Fran to Santa Cruz

Good Morning! Friday, May 14th 2021

I invite you to initiate a day that leaves an indelible image on your intellect.

Yesterday was a pretty slow and easy day. I started the day north of the golden gate pretty early in the day. I drove down through the city and over to the beach and started working my way down the coast. The first part of that trip was kind of slow with the lights and all, but once I joined up with highway 1, things started to run a bit smoother.

I stopped for coffee along the way down to Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz, I visited the Surfers museum and watched some surfers. I then drove down to the boardwalk, parked in the lot, and spent the rest of the day walking around town.

The amusement rides on the boardwalk are only open on the weekends, and then the rest of the place was pretty well empty. I stopped into a couple of the souvenir shops but didn’t pick anything up. They all seemed to have the same products, just arranged slightly differently. I then walked down to the end of the longest wharf in the country. It was also full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Again, I didn’t see anything that was all that unique.

From there, I decided to walk to an open brewery. That was about a 2-mile walk, and when I got there, yes, they were open, but only for purchase and take away. I chatted with the guy for a, and he suggested that I go to the Crepe Place, so I backtracked a bit and went into there, and it was a wonderful little place. I had a Savory Crepe and a beer and read one of the “best of Santa Cruz” magazines. Before wondering on.

After getting back to my car, I went and fueled up, and then I went and found a car wash and spent $10 to get my car washed. It feels a lot better having a clean car.

I spent the night at Sunset state beach. I camp host came by and collected my fees and sold me a bundle of wood for a fire. We started chatting, and by the time we finished, it was getting late, so I sold the wood back to him. I read for a while before hitting the hay.

As I am going through this adventure, I realize that I am enjoying this adventure, and I am enjoying driving the car (it has been fantastic). But the logistics of camping out of it are sub-optimal. And in talking with the Camp Host last night and hearing the stories of his big 5th wheel, I’m thinking that a sprinter van conversation may be a bit more of what I am looking for for a long-term road trip. Both George and Eric have them, and their utility and flexibility would be great.

Today I am heading down to Monterey and Carmel, and it should be another low mileage day as I just hang out a bit.

Love Ya!
