Day 12 – Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur

Good Morning! Sat May 15th, 2021

I hope that today justifies jubilant jazz hands of Joy!

Yesterday I drove down to Monterey, and visited Cannery row, and walked around a bit. I have concluded that there must be a whole industry creating and marketing souvenirs for the Tshirt shops, and when you find a place with a lot of those kinds of shops, it’s not going to be that interesting of a place. I had planned to visit the aquarium, but it opens back to the general public today, and I’m not there today. From there, I went over to Pacific Grove and walked around there. The vibe was a lot nicer and chiller. I stopped into a book store and picked up an anthology of John Steinbeck’s novels. We will see if I get around to finishing any of those books. At the same time, I saw that Andy Weir (the Author of the martian has a new book out. So I picked that up on Audible to listen to in the car (so far, it is not disappointing me).

From Pacific Grove, I drove down the 17-mile road. It’s a private road that goes along the seashore and through some pretty famous golf courses (including pebble beach) with some incredible vistas. So it was in and out of the car all along the way to grab some pictures.

When I existed that, I was in Carmel by the sea, so I grabbed a parking spot and walked around there for a couple of hours. I was stopping to grab a bite of lunch. Carmel was pretty lovely, and I can see the attraction there.

From there, I got back onto Highway 1, and went down Big Sur. I’m super lucky, a storm washed out a section, and it has been closed for several months, but it is open again. Man, it is spectacular! I’m amazed that my mom and Dad have ridden their bikes on this. There is a lot of vertical elevation gains, and the road isn’t that wide. But man, it is some spectacular vistas.

Every Campsite that I passed was full of people, and there are no places along that stretch to sleep in your car, so I ended up getting a motel room (My first on this trip) in San Simeon. I will say it was nice to sleep in a warm bed and take a hot shower.

Today I expect I will go less than 100 miles as I head down the coast. There is no particular place to go, but I will poke my nose into some places like Nitt Witt Ridge and see what I see.

Love Ya

Rugged beaches on Monterey Bay
That’s the long tea box. The green is to the left, so the golfer has to drive over the ocean.
Rocks and Waves on the 17 mile drive.
The lone Cypress.
A good sense of what Carmel is like.
A pretty cool little bay on Big Sur
A peek at the bridge.
Lot’s of pullouts on the road for pictures.
You end up pretty high, and can see a long way!
