Day 14 – Pismo beach to Gaviota beach (and Santa Barbara)

Good Morning! Monday, May 17th 2021

I hope that today locates you languishing lazily in the lap of luxury!

Yesterday was a good day! I started in Prismo beach, with a breakfast of biscuits and gravy that was super nummy. I walked out to the end of their wharf and then banged around town for a little while.

From there, I headed down High way 1, taking side trips here and there to explore whatever caught my eye. Along the way, I passed Vandenberg Space Force base and pulled into the Visitors Center. Well, it turns out, this isn’t like the federal parks. If you don’t have a business on the base, you don’t get onto the base. Oh Well….

I stopped at Oso Flaco Lake park and went for a hike down to the ocean shore. That was a nice little hike.

The other big stop for the day was the La Purisima Mission State, Historical Park. This park is an old Spanish mission that the CCC restored in the ’30s as part of their work. It is interesting how big of a complex it is and how many industries operated out of there. In the book store, I picked up a book about the history of the Spanish missions written by a descendent of the natives here. They are claiming that the missions were horrible places for the first peoples. And that there is a lot of whitewashing of history that goes on. And I tend to believe that…

After that, I drove along Highway 1. I decided that I would stop at all of the campgrounds I passed and get a spot in the first one that I came across since I have not been having the best of luck finding campgrounds with space (it was the weekend this past two nights). I found a spot at Gaviota Beach. Having a campsite for the evening secured, I headed into Santa Barbara to see what was going on over there.

Santa Barbara was fun. I walked through an art festival, out to the end of their wharf, and then headed inland to grab a bite of food and a beer—all in all, a pretty nice experience.

Getting back to the campground, I pitched my tent, then went to the beach to read my book for a while before crawling into the sack,

Today I am heading into Glendale, where I will meet up with my friend Brendan, his wife Rachel, and daughter Charlotte. But I don’t have to be there until 3, so I have some time and will take a leisurely pace.

Love ya
