Good Morning! Monday, May 31st, 2021
Happy Memorial Day! I hope that his day finds you yaking, not yelling, about yummy yellow yolks.
Things are good here. Yesterday Jack and I got up, made out coffee, and headed out for a nice long hike early enough that we would be able to get back to camp before it was too hot. The hike was just under 7 miles and was a loop that went over to thumb butte, up it, and then back. We could not scramble up to the very top of the butte, as it was closed for peregrine breeding. Penny was fantastic on this walk. Not quite as much running back and forth, but more run to the next shady spot and wait.
Once we got back, it was time to sit down and rest in the heat. So we pulled out our respective books and read for a while, and then we chatted for a while, and then we dozed for a while, and then chatted some more. It was an enjoyable day spent with my Nephew.
We doctored up some spaghetti sauce for dinner by frying up some onions, garlic, mushrooms, and tomatoes in olive oil, and then adding in a jar of store-bought marinara sauce. Jack boiled up some penne pasta on his stove, and then we combined them and chowed down. It was pretty yummy. Then it was back to more chatting. Before sunset, we cleaned up the cooking area before it got too dark and then chatted some more.
There is a burn ban here, so there are no campfires, but jack had the brilliant idea of putting the flashlight from his phone and putting it under an empty bottle. That really set up the ambiance for even more conversation.
This morning Jack is making us some sweet rolls from scratch. (They were supposed to be cinnamon rolls, but we forgot to buy cinnamon when shopping). I’m looking forward to how these turn out.
After breakfast, we will break camp and head out. I’ll drop Jack off, and then the plan is to head up to the Sedona area and check things out up there.
Love ya
Dan W
