Anacortes Race week – 2021 Wed Checkin

Good morning! Wed, June 23rd, 2021

I hope that today finds you well and welcoming of opportunities.

Yesterday was a beautiful warm day, with the wind coming from about 90 degrees to the left of the day before. (From the west yesterday, and from the north on Monday). The race committee had a bit of a problem getting the courses set up, so there was a postponement before everything was set and ready to go for the day. We had a great start in our first race, and we tacked to go to the right and split from the fleet. Steve saw that the boats in the class in front of us that went right were making out, and it worked for us as well. We were the first boat to get to the weather mark, and we were able to hold onto that advantage for the rest of the race and finish first in the class.

In the second and third races, we were not as fortunate. We got a 4th in the 2nd race, but what hurts there, is that we had the chance to finish 3rd, AHEAD of the boat that is in front of the standings, but we made a tactical mistake on the leg to the finish, and they were able to get past us. In the third race, we ended up getting 8th. A lot of that was because on the second run, we were caught on the outside of another boat, and they wouldn’t jibe so we could go to the other side, and we wouldn’t do the thing necessary to get behind them, so we just went a long time in the wrong direction. So the lesson we learned here is to go the right way. 🙂

We are now sitting in 5th place, one point out of 4th. (The math is actually a little harder than that, since each boat will be able to “throw out” their worst score of the regatta)

In the evening, the Corvo crew, and Alex, all went over to Justin’s house for a lovely dinner of fried chicken and an evening of camaraderie.

So that is all of the good things that happened to us.

There was, however, a tragedy on one of the boats, when one of the racers died on the water yesterday. I don’t have any details about what happened, other than he went over the side and was tangled in some lines and didn’t survive. I’ve heard rumors, but they are all from folks that weren’t there, and they heard it from folks that weren’t there, so I won’t repeat any of them here.

Love ya

We stopped in to say hi to Don and Theresa Wills. Don is The Godfather of raceweek, and Alex used to race on his boat when he was 2 years old
