Good Morning! Thursday, June 24th, 2021
I hope that today you are finding ways to stay out of the western heat!
Yesterday was a day. It started chilly, with no wind and overcast skies. We drifted around for 5 hours until the sun came out and the breeze filled in. While we waited, some lunches were auctioned off over the radio to raise money for the pink boat regatta. That was kind of cute. Someone also composed a story that included the name of every boat racing and read that over the radio, it was pretty cute.
The wind finally filled in around 3 in the afternoon and, the race committee struggled to get the course set and the marks to stay in place, but eventually, they managed to get it done and get through the start sequences. But alas, it was not to our advantage. We struggled with boat speed, and we seemed to go in the wrong direction. So by the time it was over we were in last place in the race :(. This puts us at 5th in the regatta, 10 points behind the two boats tied for 3&4.
At the dock, we had a chance to see Serhad’s son Kyle and his dog Joseph. It was good to catch up with Kyle since I haven’t seen him since his promotion to Lieutenant commander in the Navy (He flies P8’s). We also had the chance to catch up with Gary Stuntz. He used to race on the J33 with Tom and myself, and for a couple of years was the organizer for this event. He always has some good stories.
So one thing that I’ve noticed about this regatta is that we don’t have a post-race gathering because of covid protocols. Traditionally, what would happen, is that everyone gets off of the water, and then there is a big party onshore with bands and awards every evening. Everyone gathers there and catches up with each other, and that gets the mood flowing. I’ve found that I’ve been much more mellow without that. (It could also be that Butch, Bob, and myself are catalysts for each other that get things going). (It could also be that my tummy woes have slowed me down a bit). But what we do know is that the on-the-water and shoreside venues are fantastic.
Today has started warm and sunny, but the wind predictions for the racing area are not looking that promising… so we will see what happens out there today.
Love ya!
Dan W
