Anacortes Race Week 2021 – Friday Checkin

Good Morning! Friday, June 25th, 2021

I hope that you are in a happy place today, with easy interactions with the people you come in contact with.

Yesterday was a decent day. The wind was kind of messy, but not too bad. Alex and I started the day with a store run to get some breakfast, a Sandwich for Alex, and some ice for the coolers. Corvo’s lunch was the leftover PB&J sandwiches from the day before.

The day was beautiful, and the air was light, so we moved out boat call to 9:45 (instead of 9:30) since we have been getting out to the racing area with plenty of time on our hands. Yesterday was no different. When we arrived at the racing area, it was glass calm, so we tuned the rig for the light breeze and started our wait for the races to start.

It was just Steve, Stefan, Tom, and myself on board yesterday as Justin had an investor meeting for his startup.

When they finally got a race off, we had a decent start, but the wind was fluky, and we managed to find a hole in the wind that the other boats didn’t, so we ended up finishing that race second from last. The second race of the day, we did better and managed to stay out of the holes, but we did fail to cover one of our rivals (covering your rival means that you sail in the same direction that they do, keeping yourself between them and the next mark). And they were able to pass us by going way to the east while we continued on the right. That allowed them to find a bit more pressure, and when we came back together, they were ahead of us. DANG!

It turned out that no one finished the first race within the time limit, so that race committee threw out the race, which helps us since we had done so poorly.

Once the racing wrapped up, we had a beautiful run back to the marina with the spinnaker up and the music on. It was just fantastic.

Back at the dock, we got the boat put away, and then I spent about half an hour cutting up some Salt Blade salami for the j105 party that we were going to.

My friend Elizabeth drove up from Everett to join us for a little while at the part, and it was good to catch up with her (she LOVES her new job, and her new job LOVES her :). ).

The party was fun. It was outside in the parking lot of the Ullman Sails loft. They had a pretty cool BBQ made out of an old propane tank (one of the big ones from a gas station) painted black and turned into a submarine (with a mast and a propeller). It was pretty cute. Bob Ross (the J boat dealer in Seattle) bought a keg of beer for the fleet. It was fun to get introduced to more people and talk to different people in the fleet.

Justin brought us back to the marina in his rig, and we were crawling into our bunks by 10 pm last night.

Today, the wind is supposed to blow pretty hard, but it is still calm as I sit here and write this. It will be fun to see what happens.

Love Ya!
